Walkabout Clearwater Chorus
is part of Walkabout Clearwater Sloop, Inc., a chartered sloop club that supports the environmental efforts of the Poughkeepsie-based
Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.
The chorus, in essence a true “people’s chorus”, is comprised of folks who simply love to sing. There are no auditions and members are encouraged to find their own niche within the group. At any given performance, the chorus may number from 15 to 40 members who come from throughout the entire New York metropolitan area, as well as Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The chorus’s repertoire ranges from boisterous sing-alongs with audience participation to carefully crafted harmonious messages designed to make the listener think twice about the state of the world. Their “music with a message” includes many songs written by chorus members themselves.
Founded in 1984 with the help of folk music mainstay Pete Seeger, Walkabout Clearwater is also known for its 7 ft-tall model of the sloop Clearwater. Designed to go inland where the "big sloop" can't, the Clearwater model has appeared in parades and displays throughout the tri-state region.
